Competency-Based Interviews:

What to
Expect
and How
to Prepare

What is a Competency-Based Interview?

A competency-based interview is designed to assess your skills, knowledge, and experience by asking about past situations you’ve encountered at work. Many employers use this method because it provides insight into how you’re likely to perform in the future.

Unlike traditional interviews, competency-based interviews focus on real examples of how you’ve demonstrated key skills, such as problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, or adaptability.

Interview Preparation: Setting Yourself Up for Success

To succeed, follow the STAR method, which helps structure your answers clearly:
Situation:

Briefly describe the situation or challenge you faced.

Task:

Explain your responsibility in that situation.

Action:

Detail the specific steps you took to address it.

Result:

Share the outcome and any key learnings.

Interview Preparation: Setting Yourself Up for Success

  1. Understand the Role

Carefully read the job description, noting the key responsibilities and required skills. Consider how your past experiences align with these.

  2. Identify Your Key Strengths

Make a list of your strongest skills and experiences that match the job requirements. Prepare at least two STAR examples for each key competency.

  3. Practice Your Answers

Rehearse out loud or with a friend. Focus on staying concise and ensuring your answers highlight your impact in previous roles.
